Olgiy is famous for attracting guests from many different places with its food. There are many people who are attracted by the lust for Kazakh food prepared by the families and restaurants. Askhana means restaurant, Chaikhana means cafe. Since the signs are written in Mongolian most of the times, it is easy to find them.

Obviously those who visit Olgiy would order Kazakh food first of all. The Kazakh dishes here are anyway the most favorite ones among guests visiting this place.

When you go to Olgiy, you should definitely try such specialties like sirne, besbarmak and of course kazy. It will be very tasty and special meal. Also you can find this traditional dishes in “Arvin”, “Bai-Olke” restaurants.

Bayan-Olgiy aimag is famous for its pristine nature, there are many interesting things to see in Olgiy. Olgiy’s local research museum consist of three sections- nature, ethnography, repressed people and history, and has over 5,000 displays. In the ethnographical section, there are household things and belongings that belong to different national minoritie, Kazakh national ger, national clothes, musical instruments, jewelry and many other interesting displays.

Other sections also have interesting displays wort spending time to see. During weekdays, it is open from 09:00 to 18:00 and on Saturday it is open from 10:00 to 17:00. There are ancient stone monuments in the yard of the museum. If you travel during Nauryz and Eagle festival, you will see national horse riding games during these holidays in both city and the countryside.

If your travel doesn’t coincide with the holidays, you can hear the sound of dombra (traditional musical Kazakh instrument) and enjoy kazy (traditional dish) by visiting a Kazakh family.

Altai Tavan Bogd Complex covering an area of 636 ha of land is a special protected area which was established in order to protect the king peaks of Altai such as Altai Tavan Bogd, Turgenii mountains, Rashaan Dungurukh, Songino, Yolt mountains and Khoton, Khurgan, Dayan mountain ranges and where wild animals like snow leopards, fallow-deers, altai snowcocks, beech martens, wild sheep and ibexes. The Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain is located in 185 km from Olgiy city.

The highest peak in the most western part of Altai Tavan Bogd is the Khuiten peak that is 4,374m high. Also, Altai Tavan Bogd has such permanent snow peaks as Nairamdal, Malchin, Burged, Naran and Huiten. Altai Tavan Bogd is also famous with its glaciers. The Potanin’s glacier is 20 km long, 5 km wide, and there are Grane and Alexander glaciers as well. In Tavan Bogd, one has an opportunity to ride a horse, go for hiking and get acquainted with the lifestyle of Kazakhs and Tuvans.

Many foreign and domestic tourists come here to climb to the peaks of Altai Tavan Bogd. Although tourists come here throughout the year, the most favorable months are July to September. During this period, the weather is mild and the gorges at the glaciers can be properly seen.

Altai Tavan Bogd is an area with pristine nature which is the most appropriate for traveling in the wild nature and it is possible to climb the mountains almost only through two routes. The waterfall of Baga Turgenii pass located between the western beaches of Khoton and Khurgan lakes and the Turgenii mountains is the highest in this area. The waterfall falls from an almost vertical 36-high rock in two layers through two openings, forming one small and one large waterfalls.

The ikh (large) waterfall is 23 meter high and Baga (small) waterfall is 13 meter high. Moreover, there are many other waterfalls in the area not commonly known to others. For example, there are two waterfalls in Rashaant pass. The lower waterfall of the mountain is 15 meters high and the upper one is 25 meter high. The upper waterfall has emanates plenty of water and sound as well.

The dramatic steep valley, surrounded by snowcapped mountains from the south, is where many Kazakh nomadic families spend their summer time. Even people from Olgiy city who have relatives here like to pass their vacations in this serene place.

The area very famous for its hot spring; a lot of locals come here to receive treatment. Fishing is not a main pursuit for nomads, but if they have got free time, they sometimes fish here. The melt water from Altai Tavan Bogd is a source for the lakes.

The mix of lakes, rivers, mountains and forests makes this not only a haven for fauna, but also a great place for riding, hiking and other outdoor pursuits. On horseback in Mongolia, the world is at your doorstep.

What greater freedom is there than to ride through this snowcapped, mountainous, lake-filled landscape without the restrictions of roads and paths? From the saddle, look out for ibex, Altai marmot, and golden eagles. Elk, wolves, brown bears, hares, lynx and the very rare snow leopard also inhabit this area.

Achit is a fresh water lake that is located in 80 km east from Olgiy city. It is around 10 m deep and a number of small and large rivers flow into it, while a tiny river called Usan Khooloi takes start from it and flow into Khovd River. Fishes like altai bigmouth Osman and Mongolian grayling inhabit the Achit Lake.

In order to preserve pheasants, wild boars, beavers and wild sea-buckthorns in the area near the Devel island between the Usan Khooloi and Khovd river, these are taken under special protection. Moreover, since the area is rich with different types of bird that stay in summer and even in winter, bird-watching tours are common here.

Tolbo lake of Altai mountains is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Mongolia that is surrounded by rocky mountains and hills reaching as high as 1,500m. The lake has a number of smaller islands one of which called Kishkene Tolgoi protrudes approximately 4m over the water level.

Camel festival is organized to promote the protection of camels, improve local tourism, and educate the local on protecting the environment and the nature.

This festival is one of the biggest winter festivals in Gobi region and become one of the major events of the Mongolian tourism sector. Every soum of Umnugobi province, Dundgobi, Gobi-Altai and Bayankhongor has also become a successful spot for the festival.

The festival program consists of a march of camels, the selection of best couple riding camels, a camel polo tournament, an ankle bone shooting competitions, the sale camel milk and milk products and camel wool products, the display and souvenirs, camel racing, and so on.
